Paragraphs

Bee playing computer games1. A paragraph is a piece of writing which deals with just one topic or point.

2. That topic is normally stated in the opening sentence.

3. You should then expand and develop the statement in the sentences which follow.

4. You should also provide examples to illustrate the central idea.

5. The last sentence of a paragraph should try to round off the topic in some way.

6. Paragraphs may be linked with terms such as 'However' and 'On the other hand'.

7. If you are in any doubt, let the paragraphs stand separately and speak for themselves.

8. Here is an example of a paragraph:

There is great variation in the regions of England. Cumbria and the Lake District is a hilly, agricultural region which is famous for its natural beauty. The Midlands on the other hand is densely populated and mainly industrial region. Similarly, East Anglia is flat, mainly agricultural, and quite under-populated; whilst the Greater London region is one of the most densely populated parts of the world. These differences make England a popular tourist attraction.
