| REMEMBER
- FOR THIS EXAM YOU NEED EITHER A COPY OF THE ANTHOLOGY OR COPIES
OF THE POEMS YOU HAVE STUDIED.
FRONT PAGE
Look
at the cover of the exam paper and READ all of the instructions
very carefully. This page contains a lot of important information
that you need to be aware of:
- the amount of time you have for the exam
- which questions you should answer - take notice of the sections
where you have a CHOICE
- how long you should spend on each section
SECTION A - PART 1
This
section tests your understanding of the poems of CAROL ANN
DUFFY. You should not waste time looking at questions about other
poets - WE HAVE NOT STUDIED THEM!
Therefore,
in Section A, for your mock exams, you should go straight to either
question 3 OR question 4.
YOU
CAN DECIDE WHICH QUESTION TO ANSWER BUT BEWARE ... ONE OF THE QUESTIONS
WILL PROBABLY NAME 2 POEMS YOU HAVE TO WRITE ABOUT. IF YOU HAVEN'T
STUDIED THEM IN DETAIL YOU CAN'T ANSWER THIS KIND OF QUESTION.
LOOK
INSTEAD FOR, THE MORE GENERAL QUESTION WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO CHOOSE
WHICH POEMS YOU WRITE ABOUT.
Whichever
question you choose, there will be bullet points. These give you
guidance about what to include in your answer, so don't ignore
them.
SECTION A - PART 2
This
section tests your understanding of the 'Poems from Other Cultures & Traditions'
in the Anthology. Each class will probably have studied different
poems from this section, so don't worry if you haven't studied
the same poems as your friends.
Like
the Carol Ann Duffy section, there will be a question which tells
you which poems to write about. Don't forget, if you haven't studied
them in class RECENTLY (or at all), forget this question. Go for
the one that allows you to choose which poems to write about -
and don't forget to look closely at the bullet points. (These are
really the answer!)
FOR
EACH PART OF SECTION A, AIM TO SPEND ABOUT 30 MINUTES PLANNING,
WRITING, AND CHECKING YOUR ANSWER.
SECTION B
This
section is very similar to Section B on Paper 1. It tests your
ability to write in a particular style, and again you are given
the choice of three different styles.
You
are told to spend about ONE HOUR, on this section and again, it
is worth 54 marks - therefore you will be expected to write quite
a lot.
Look
at the information in the box - you are told what the examiner
will be looking for in your answer, so don't ignore this information.
This
section is really worth too many marks for you to attempt a question
you don't feel too confident about. At this stage, it would be
advisable if you ignored the options where you either have to INFORM
or EXPLAIN. By the time you do your GCSEs in June you will have
done lots of work on these kinds of writing, but you probably won't
have done a lot yet.
However,
you do know how to DESCRIBE - therefore, it would probably be better
for you, AT THIS STAGE, to look at this option and attempt this
question.
Don't
forget to PLAN your answer and CHECK it for silly errors - you
can pick up valuable marks! |
