Glossary & Test Link Glossary Test GENERAL TIPS ON SPELLING

Green bullet Spelling in the English language is quite a complex business.

Green bullet Everybody finds it difficult at some point.

Green bullet Learn the basic rules, pay close attention, and be prepared to use a dictionary.

SPELLING-CHECKERS

Green bullet If you are producing work on a word-processor - use the spelling checker.

Green bullet This will help you to spot any words you have not spelled incorrectly.

Green bullet Using the spell-checker is NOT cheating.

Green bullet The spell-checker might be set for American spellings.

SPELLING and PRONUNCIATION

Green bullet Spelling is a sort of code in which the sounds of words are represented in writing by letters of the alphabet.

Green bullet The spelling of most words is now largely fixed.

Green bullet Words are NOT spelled according to how they are spoken.

Green bullet Spelling mistakes in formal writing create a very bad impression.

Green bullet Some words may have more than one acceptable spelling:

connection can be spelled connexion
judgement can be spelled judgment

Green bullet Spelling in English does have rules - but there are many exceptions. The plural of baby is babies but the plural of donkey is donkeys. We write about honour but the adjective is spelled honorary
