HOW
TO FORM PLURALS
The
simplest way to form plurals is to add -s to the end of
a word.
- book > books
- school > schools
- jumper > jumpers
But
if the word ends in -s, -sh, -ch, -x,
or -o, you form the plural by adding -es
- kiss > kisses
- wish > wishes
- church > churches
- tax > taxes
- hero > heroes
But
if the word ends in -f, or -fe, you form the plural
by changing the ending to -veadding -s
- leaf > leaves
- wife > wives
- roof > rooves
If
the word ends in -y, you form the plural by adding either -s or -ies
- toy > toys
- key > keys
- try > tries
- Tory > Tories
There
are quite a lot of exceptions to these rules - called 'irregular
plurals'.
- child > children
- man > men
- woman > women
- mouse > mice
