Definition

Green bullet Autobiography means a record of someone's life, written by that person.

Green bulletA biography of that person would be written by somebody else.

Green bulletIt's a word made from three other words - all Greek.

Green bullet 'Auto' (self) + 'bios (life) + graphein (to write).

Green bulletAn autobiography doesn't have to be a complete record. It might just cover part of the writer's life.

EXAMPLES

  • Laurie Lee's Cider with Rosie
  • Anne Frank's The Diary of Anne Frank
  • Stephen Fry's Moab is my Washpot

USE

Green bullet The events of an autobiography are normally retold in the order that they happened.

Green bullet In other words, they are told in chronological order.

Green bullet They are normally told in the past tense.

Green bullet The author usually uses "I" - the first person pronoun

Green bulletThe difference between autobiography and fiction is that the characters are real people, and the events really happened.

Green bulletAutobiographies are often interesting because the authors reveal their true feelings and tell us about events from their own point of view.

Green bullet You feel like you get to know the author like a close friend.
