Definition
An
adjective is a describing word.
In
most sentences, it goes before the word
it describes.
Examples
brown sunny shiny bright red
- This is a brown pencil box.
- He was wearing a shiny red tracksuit.
- It turned out to be a bright sunny day.
Use
Most
adjectives describe the thing to which they are attached.
They
tell you about its size, colour, and other features.
Don't
use too many adjectives. Here's a bad example:
the fierce ugly old black shepherd dog
Good
writers use just a few adjectives, chosen with care.
You
can have a a single adjective:
Or
you can have more than one:
'The big shiny yellow beach ball'.
You
have to put the adjectives in this order:
Size texture colour type
The
next sentence is not normal English, because the
adjectives are not in the right order:
The yellow big beach shiny ball.
Don't
worry! You will probably not make mistakes like
this.

people learn these rules without knowing it! |
